Data Center Management

Data Center Security

Data Center Security: Of Prime Importance In Securing Your Database.

There have been a number of reports in the press on cyber attacks on various installations. The increase in the number of attacks is alarming. Companies have become rather reactive to security considerations rather than anticipating all kinds of attacks on their data centers and trying to find means to being proactive in protecting them. With the increase in the number of Data Centers catering to the needs of a number of key industries, the need for Data Center Security awareness needs to increase. Companies should establish robust data centers to ensure that they work 24/7.

Hackers are a major threat to data centers. There are basically four methods used by hackers to break into data centers. One way is to attack the database, servers and storage systems with the help of viruses, worms and breach of administrative access. Another way that hackers attack is through outdated software. Network systems like routers and switches can be attacked through breaches of access. Yet another method is that of DDoS (distributed denial of service). Data Centers are also subject to natural and man-made disasters like earthquakes, typhoons and terrorist attacks.

Threat perception is the beginning of planning for security of the data centers. Security is a continuous process and has to be a part of the operations of the data center. Employees should also be aware of the security measures. If the data center is attacked, there should be a disaster recovery plan in place for recovery of data. The way to planning for recovery at such times is through the Disaster Recovery project approach to recovery of data. This is a continuous process.

The project approach to disaster recovery starts with the pre-planning process. At this stage, the existing environment of the organization is assessed. The Security systems prevalent in the organization relating to personnel, operations, physical security, development and maintenance of electronic systems and other factors are studied. This will give you an assessment of the vulnerability of the organization. An assessment of the impact of security breaches on the business should be made. With this as the basis, an assessment of recovery requirements is made. This should include hardware, software, documentation, support from the outside, infrastructure facilities and personnel requirements. Finally, a disaster recovery plan should be drawn up and put in place. Thus Disaster recovery projects should help survival of organizations in times of disaster and assist in resumption of normal business operations at the earliest. So be proactive and make sure that a Data Center Security System is put in place from the very beginning.
